The goal of this project is to bring together resources which will support teachers of all levels in the teaching of Native American literature so that it reflects Native American identity as a modern, enduring, and expanding identity. Literature is a vital part of how students understand the world around them; therefore it is important that teachers have access to sources that accurately and justly portray Native American Identity. This list has been compiled by teachers who are themselves learners and are striving to find better ways to teach Native American Literature. To this end we have agreed that this list will focus on sources that view Native American culture and identity as a vibrant, living voice in the discourse of education. We’ve tried to avoid resources that portray Native Americans as a “dead people,” or from a purely “historical” viewpoint. We’ve also tried to avoid resources that stereotype, trivialize or appropriate Native American culture.
